The body manufactures this amino acid from tryptophan, which is found in dietary proteins and is used to make serotonin, an important substance for normal nerve and brain function.

Adults and children over 16 years of age, one to two tablets daily, can be increased to four if required.Maximum of six tablets can be taken a day.
Short term side effects from high doses of 5-HTP include nausea and vomiting, stomach cramps, nightmares, and decreased sex drive.It would be best not to use it while trying to become pregnant, during pregnancy, lactation and breast feeding.
